Rod was born on July 1, 1953, son of Kenny and Kelly (Turek) Young. He grew up in Iowa City with his brother Greg and attended high school at West High. During high school he met the love of his life, Donna (Huff). They were united in marriage on July 6, 1974. Rod and Donna have 3 children, Brian, Alicia and Scott. They moved from Iowa City to North Liberty in 1984.
Rod worked for Town and Country Home Furnishings for 17 years. In 1988 he started his own business as a mobile tools distributor for Mac Tools, eventually becoming district manager. In 1996, he went to work for Matco Tools as a mobile tools distributor, eventually becoming district manager. Since 2011, Rod was employed by Rochester Armored Car Company. Rod and Donna also own and operate a Tropical Sno Hawaiian Shaved Ice stand, which they opened in the summer of 2002. As with everything Rod did, he always found a way to have fun at work and make others laugh.

Rods other great love, besides his family, was riding his Victory motorcycle with his best friend since fourth grade, Mike. They would travel many weekends, crisscrossing the back roads of Iowa, to “mom and pop joints” and “dives” on their “Tenderloin Tour”, in search of the biggest and best tenderloin. They even had their own scoring criteria. Rod enjoyed cooking, especially trying out new crock-pot recipes. He was an avid Hawkeye, Cubs, and NHRA fan. Rod treasured the time he spent with his granddaughters, Emma and Claire. He often times went out of his way to make them happy and smile, which usually consisted of a late night or early morning run to the grocery store to buy specialty ice cream.

Survivors include his cherished wife Donna; his children, Brian (Erica) Young of Cosgrove, Alicia (Matt) Hayes of Cedar Rapids, and Scott Young (Misty) of Coralville, two granddaughters, Emma and Claire Hayes; a brother Greg (Sharon) Young of Blairstown and lifelong friend Mike (Sue) Clements.

Rod’s parents preceded him in death.
