Vern E. Schnoebelen, 85 of Iowa City died Friday, August 28, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, September 3, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, where Sunday Parking Ordinance is in effect for the streets near the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Wednesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Private burial will take place at Lone Tree Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Vern’s memory to Iowa City Hospice who had so compassionately cared for both Vern and his wife, Sondra in their last days. Vern Edward Schnoebelen was born July 1, 1930, near Riverside, Iowa the son of George and Mary (Heitzman) Schnoebelen. He graduated from Riverside High School just prior to enlisting in the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. Returning to this area following service he married Sondra Kline on June 1, 1953, in Lone Tree. The couple made their home in Iowa City where Vern worked for the former Moore Business Forms (R.R. Donnelly) over 40 years before retiring. Vern was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and enjoyed attending St. Patrick’s. He was a former member of the American Legion, Moose and the KC’s. He enjoyed his life, he and Sondra loved traveling the countryside in their RV or simply parking it near Kinnick for their Saturday tailgating time. Vern had many hobbies including, hunting, fishing, woodworking, golf, playing cards with old friends, new friends, and family; cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, or Chicago Cubs; and spending time at the casinos. There was nothing more important to Vern than his family. He loved being there for his kids and grandkids, being Grandpa was the icing on the cake.

His family includes his three children, Dan Schnoebelen (JoAnn Connor) of Twin Falls, ID; Deborah Lee (Peter) of King George, VA; and Jim Schnoebelen (Julie) of Cedar Rapids; 5 grandchildren, Drew, Ann and her fiancé Nate Baggett; Zachary, Joy and Grant; Vern’s siblings, Zelma Burr or Lone Tree, Frances Self of Arizona, Anita Mehaffey of South Dakota, Dolores Kempf of Iowa City, Dorothy Johnson of Washington, and Alvin Schnoebelen of Lone Tree.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sondra; a brother Herb. And a sister, Coletta.
