Edith Elizabeth Piper passed away on August 13th at her home in Bickford Cottage in Iowa City after suffering a stroke at the age of 97.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, August 22nd at First Mennonite Church, 405 Myrtle Avenue, Iowa City, with Pastor Karla Detweiler and Pastor Gordon Scoville officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the Church. Memorials may be directed to First Mennonite Church – Building for Christian Community or Bickford Cottages of Iowa City.

Edith was born July 8, 1918 as the sixth out of nine children born to Noah D and Kate (Egli) Kauffman in Manson, IA. On October 1, 1939 she married Elmo V. Piper in Manson. They lived in the Rockwell City and Manson area before moving to the Iowa City in 1952 where they farmed the Probst brothers’ farms until 1980 when they retired to a home in Coralville, IA. Edith also worked at the Carousel Restaurant in Coralville during the 1970s.

She is survived by her sons Larry (Sherry)of Hot Springs Village, AR; Ronald (Myrna) of Harrisonburg, VA; Philip (Sharon) of Angleton, TX; James of Iowa City and a daughter Ruth (Gerry) Peterson of Iowa City, 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmo in 1992, a granddaughter, Gretchen Piper; her four brothers: Roy Kauffman (Tiskilwa, IL), Joe (Iowa City, IA), Daniel (Boxholm, IA), Walter (Lincoln, NE) and sisters: Marian Jones (LasAnimas, CO), Grace Nachtigall (Iowa City, IA), Gertrude Powell (South English, IA), and Rose Svoboda Mason (Garden Valley, CA).

Edith was an active member of First Mennonite Church of Iowa City serving in several capacities in leadership at the church. She also served a term as President of the Iowa-Nebraska Conference WMSC organization. Edith was a faithful member giving of her time, talents and money to support missions and education programs through the church organizations.
She is remembered for her welcoming, friendly smile and for being a “hostess with the mostest.” She was considered a prayer warrior for the church. When failing eyesight and arthritis took away her ability to cook, read and quilt, she spent her remaining years meditating and praying.
