John Albert Dohrer, 82, died Friday, August 21, 2015 at UIHC surrounded by his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 PM Monday, August 24 at St. Peter’s Church in Cosgrove, IA with Father Edmond Dunn officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM where a rosary and vigil will be held at 6:30 pm. Military Honors will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wounded Warriors Project.

John was born August 7, 1933 in Iowa City, the son of John W. and Virginia Lewis Dohrer. He lived with his paternal grandparents. John helped his grandparents farm, and loved to ride horses.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired in 1987 from the Army Reserves, after 34 years of service. John loved his country and was proud to serve in the military.
John met his wife Patricia Neuzil and they were married in 1956. They have five children. John was proud of each and every one of them.

John operated the Smith Oil Company and Skelly Truck Stop in Coralville. He retired from the University of Iowa Cambus system in 1995.

John loved boating, fishing, hunting, trap shooting, playing on the computer, gun repair and mechanics. He always looked forward to a good game of Euchre, which he loved playing with his family and friends. In 1999, John and Patricia began to spend winters in Florida. He enjoyed walking outdoors with their dog, Wilson. He also loved their cat Oreo, who would sit for hours watching John play on the computer.

John was very active in the Turkey Creek Social Club in Palm Bay, FL. He contributed his time helping with the community celebrations, calling bingo and collecting and recycling cans for the social club fund. He loved visiting his friends and neighbors.

He was a member of Cosgrove Council of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph Church in Palm Bay, FL. and St. Wenceslaus Church and St. Peter’s Church .

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Patricia; his children Steven (Cindy) of Iowa City, Renae (James Carrell) of Palm Bay, FL, Kevin of Coralville, IA; Michelle (Steven) Ferguson of Greensboro, IN and Alicia (Dennis) O’Leary of Oxford, IA; 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and three half-sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and half-brother.
