Donald E. Gregory, 86, of Coralville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at his home.

A celebration of Don's life will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June, 29, 2015 at Brown Deer Golf Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Coralville Fire Department.

Don was born December 24, 1928 in Hedrick, Iowa, the son of Charles and Evelyn Crookham. He graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa, where he met the love of his life, Vergene Green. After his service in the United States Army, they were married on May 14, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines. The couple moved to the Iowa City/Coralville area in 1948 to attend school and start their family. Don played football while in school and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1952. Don and Vergene were strong Iowa Hawkeyes fans. Together they owned and operated Gregory Properties. He retired as Assistant Chief of the Coralville Fire Department where he volunteered for over 30 years.

Don and Vergene were true to supporting their Coralville community and were contributors to the Coralville Public Library, Iowa Firefighters Memorial, Coralville Optimist Club, Coralville Center for Performing Arts, Coralville Community Aquatic Center, and the Coralville Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his daughters, Debbie (Dale) Mitchener of Heeney, Colorado, Lynn (Bob) Snyder of Coralville, and Janet (Bob Ravn) Gregory of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters, Phyllis Hayes of Tacoma, Washington, and Mary Jo (Ken) Schlecht of Rochester, New York; brother, Chuck Gregory of Holyoke, Massachusetts; grandchildren: Michelle (Don) Nichols of Coralville and their children, Kiera and Kelsey, Marie Raven of Iowa City, Beth Snyder of Coralville, Stuart Raven of Anchorage, Scott Snyder of Coralville, and Jimmy Mitchener of Coralville.

Don was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother-in-law, JT Hayes; and sister-in-law, Betty Gregory.

The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to Dawn Jones, caretaker and close friend, for the excellent care of their father.
