Lila Levon Nannemann, 90, of Iowa City, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015 at Iowa City Rehab and Health Care Center.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service (605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa 52240). A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery.

Levon was born on February 23, 1925 in Humeston, Iowa, the daughter of John and Louisa Elizabeth (Sumpter) Thompson. Her mother taught her to sing as a child and her father took her to church to sing when she was six years old. Levon grew up singing, sometimes in the rain. She enjoyed singing in church choirs, Indiana State Women’s Chorus, Sweet Adelines International, and directed women’s chorus at church in Manilla, Iowa. She also taught children’s chorus at South Street (Trinity Park) Methodist Church in Greenfield,
Indiana.

Levon is survived by one son, John (Rita) Spreen; two daughters, Linda Ratliff (Norman B., Jr.) and Mary (Jack Grogan, Jr.) Spreen; grandchildren: Karen Elsea, Kevin Spreen, Dylan Hengstler, Joel Hengstler, Abe Grogan, and Lucy Davis; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Jerry (Frieda) Thompson; and one sister, Mona Phippen.

Levon was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Shirley; three brothers, Perry, Willard, and Henry; and one sister, Delsa Smith. She had two additional brothers, Gurney and Junior “Pete” Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
