Donald M. “Don” Laughlin, 94, longtime resident of Iowa City died Wednesday, April 22, 2015, surrounded by his family and under the compassionate care of the Hospice Unit at Mercy Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City (Sunday Parking Ordinance in effect). Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery where military honors will be provided. Visitation will be from 10am until 12 noon on Saturday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Don’s memory to Iowa City Hospice, Regina Foundation or Mercy Hospital Foundation. Donald Max Laughlin was born April 4, 1921, in Perry, Iowa the son of Fred and June (Conner) Laughlin. His family moved to Iowa City in 1926 where he attended schools, graduating from City High School in 1941. During World War II, Don enlisted and served in the United States Army. On April 20, 1947, Don was united in marriage to Mary Scheetz in the Rectory of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The couple raised their family here and for over thirty years, Don worked for the Iowa City Post Office. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Eagles Lodge, and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge.

His family includes his four children, Linda Mitchell (Jerry) of Coralville; Steven Laughlin (Karen) of Iowa City; Jon Laughlin of Cedar Rapids; and Barb Laughlin of Iowa City; two grandsons, David Laughlin (Heather) and Brian Kindl; three great-grandchildren, Annalise, Landon and Grady Laughlin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; brother, Bob; sister, Virginia Sinklier; half-brother, Forest Conner and a son-in-law, Clayton Gorder.
