Glenn H. Bates, 92, of 1429 Spruce Street in Iowa City, died Saturday, January 31, 2004 at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa after an extended illness.

Close friends & family may call Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton with Pastor Michael Lynch officiating. The family requests that memorials be directed to Iowa City Church of The Nazarene.

Glenn was born March 30, 1912 in Vinton, the son of James & Sarah “Amanda” (Redington) Bates. He farmed north of Vinton and lived in Benton County most of his life where he married Dorothy Snyder on July 14, 1937. Glenn worked at the Vinton School for the Blind for 19 years until moving with his wife Dorothy to Iowa City in 1965, where they raised their two grandchildren, Gerald & Terrie.
Glenn was employed by The University of Iowa at Oakdale until his retirement in 1981.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Iowa City; his daughter Beverly Petsche of LaPorte City, Iowa; two grandchildren, Terrie Bates of Iowa City and Gerald Bates of Louisville, Kentucky; six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and two nieces, Viola McNeil & Adabelle Roster, both of Vinton.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charlie & Jay.
