Gary D. Maas, 35, of Iowa City, died Friday, March 11, 1994, at Merchy Hospital in Iowa City after a long illness.

A service was conducted March 14 in Iowa City with burial in Memory Gardens Cemetery there. A memorial was established to the Alliance of the Mentally Ill.

Maas was born Feb. 18, 1959, in Fairfield, the son of Charles A. and Charlotte Smith Maas. He was raised in Iowa City, graduated from City High School in 1977, and from Kirkwood Community College. He had been employed by Bud Maas. Concrete and worked as a custodian for the University of Iowa. He was a member of Kaaba Shrine, Iowa City Shrine Club, Commandry Council Chapter, was a past district officer of DeMolay, and a past master of Masonic Lodge 667.

Surviving are his mother; two brothers, Burdette "Bud" and Charles Wayne, both of Iowa City; a niece; a nephew; and a grandmother, Elsie Smith of Dallas Center.
