Margaret Evelyn Smith, 96, formerly of Iowa City and Liberty Country Living of North Liberty died peacefully Monday January 5, 2004 at Lantern Park Care Center.

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2004 at Lensing Funeral Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. A service led by Rev. Bruce Fisher will be held after the visitation on Saturday at 1:00pm with burial at Oakland Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ Iowa City or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Margaret was born November 23, 1907 in Donnybrook, North Dakota, to Henry Burton and Arvilla Victoria (Cook) Winne. She was raised and educated in Williston, North Dakota, then worked in the Fargo North Dakota area as a legal secretary. She married Marvin Joseph Smith November 17, 1935. After ten years in North and South Dakota, they settled in Sibley, Iowa where they owned and operated first an International Harvester dealership and then Smith’s Shoes. After Marvin’s death in 1976, Margaret worked at Stewarts Shoes in downtown Iowa City, retiring in 1990. She was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ the Iowa City and a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Margaret is survived by her children: Shirley Smalley and her husband Allan of Houston, Texas; Roger Smith and his wife Carmen of Bend, Oregon; Marcia Munz of Iowa City; eight grandchildren: Jerry Nepon-Sixt and his wife Janice of Tampa, Florida, Mary Sixt-Jackson of Iowa City, Rosemary Roelf and her husband Mike of Iowa City, Martha Greer of Iowa City, Steve Munz and his wife Amy of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Karen Guth and her husband Joe of Portland, Oregon and Allison Smith and Wyatt Smith of San Francisco, California; ten great grandchildren and one sister, Doris Eastman of Seal Beach, California.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ervin; four sisters, Helen Peterson, Florence Smith, Mazie Wayne and Edith Wells and one grandson, Thomas Sixt.
