KAY BERNAU, 64, 10 Oakridge Avenue, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 of cancer at home surrounded by her family.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2004 at 2pm at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Iowa City with Rev. Kyle R. Otterbein and Rev. Harlan Winter officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemtery. Friends may call from 4-7PM Friday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City where the family will greet friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UIHC c/o University of Iowa Foundation, Box 4550, Iowa City, Iowa 52244

Kay was born May 20, 1939 in Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of Thays and Marjorie Lewis Manwiller. She was a 1956 graduate of McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. Kay married William Bernau on January 2, 1960 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. They would have celebrated their 43 wedding anniversary this Friday.

Kay and her family lived in Crawfordsville, Iowa from 1966-1993 at which time they moved to Iowa City. In Crawfordsville, Kay and her family were members of the United Church of Crawfordsville, where she taught Sunday School and started the children’s story hour at Waco Elementary School.

Kay served as the President and Board member of the University Athletic Club; volunteered with Project Green, where she had been a Co-Director for the steering committee and assisted with the annual plant sale;and was a member of PEO. She had volunteered at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for over 3000 hours and was a sponsor of many events at Hancher Auditorium, where she was involved with Hancher Guild. Kay was the founder of one of the Red Hat Clubs in Iowa City and was active with the Wall Street Women’s Investment Club. In the early 1960’s , while living in Cedar Rapids she was Playtime Poppy for the Cedar Rapids Children’s Theatre. Kay practiced friendship with everyone she came in contact with.

Her grandchildren affectionately called her Nani or Mama Nau. She loved traveling to Europe and especially loved Paris. Kay enjoyed bridge, gardening and playing piano, which she learned in her adult life.

She is survived by her loving husband, William
One Daughter: Heidi Wagler and her husband, Russell of Crawfordsville, Iowa and their children Josie, Gaby and Sam
Two Sons: Thomas Bernau and his wife Kathryn of Des Moines
John Bernau and his wife Amy of Manchester, Iowa and their children Cole, Nolan and Nicholas
One Sister; Sharon Rosenberg and her husband Dr. Harry of Cedar Rapids
Three Brothers: Jerry Manwiller and his Sandra of Des Moines
Gary Manwiller and his wife Pauline of Ridgeway, Missouri
Larry Manwiller and Ursula of Valley Junction, Kansas
Kay was preceded in death by her parents.
