Lesley H. Menninger of 130 Ferson Avenue in Iowa City, IA 52246 died December 27, 2003 after a long illness. Ms. Menninger was born in 1935 in Las Vegas, NV to Robert Exton Hiller of Hurley, NY and Eleanor Woodruff Hiller of Akron, OH, both now deceased. She graduated from Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH), in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in Biology and received a master's degree in Medical Sciences from Harvard University in 1959. She worked in biological research at Caltech, Harvard and the University of Iowa. A resident of Iowa City since 1973, Menninger was an active participant in local efforts such as the drive to bring the teaching of foreign languages to the elementary schools. She also tutored English as a second language for many years as a volunteer.

Menninger was a passionate supporter of the arts both at the university and in the community, in particular dance and music. In recognition of her interest and involvement, she received the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce Star Award in 2001.

Lesley is survived by her husband John Robert Menninger, her daughters, Margaret Eleanor Menninger of Austin, TX and Elizabeth M. Wallace of Tucson AZ, son-in-law Andrew T. Wallace, and two grandchildren, Ian Robert and Sumner Elizabeth Wallace. She is also survived by her sisters Elizabeth H. Brinkworth of Golden, CO and Catherine H. Sullivan of Lancaster, CA.

A memorial service is tentatively planned for the spring of 2004. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the S.L.E. Foundation, Inc. (149 Madison Avenue, Suite 205; New York, NY 10016) or the UI Foundation School of Music String Quartet Funds (University of Iowa, Iowa City IA 52242).
