Agnes Emma Birrer, 101, of Hills, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at Atrium Village in Hills. Funeral Mass will be at 10 am on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills with Father Michael Spiekermeier officiating. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Friday at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City, and also after 9 am Saturday at the church. A rosary will be recited at 4pm on Friday at Lensing Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Agnes Birrer Memorial Fund.
Agnes was born on May 16, 1911 in Bauer, IA the daughter of Stephen and Barbara (Schneider) Metz. She grew up in Bauer, IA. During the war, Agnes worked as a Riveter for Beech Aircraft in Wichita, KS. Agnes later moved to Iowa City and was proud of her work as a housekeeper and cook for two prominent local families. She married George Birrer on August 7, 1948 and lived on the family farm south of Hills.
Agnes was happiest when working and will always be remembered for her gardening, quilting, and fine cooking. She will be missed by many.
Survivors include her three children: Barbara Walters (John) of Berwyn, IL, Martin Birrer (Laurie) of Hills and JoAnne Montgomery (William) of Riverside; six grandchildren: Benjamin Walters, Daniel Walters, Jonathan Walters, Emily Phillips, Sarah Beecher and Adam Montgomery; one great-granddaughter Madison Phillips and a sister-in-law Rosie Metz.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents, five brothers: Firmin, Victor, Joseph, Leo and Alban; and six sisters: Florence Frueh, Ethel (Sr. Clarona O.S.F), Mildred Thomann, Clara Strabala, Esther Ernst and Rita Strabala.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Atrium Village for the compassionate care which they provided to their mother.
