Helen E. Wonick, age 80 formerly of 719 Streb Street, Iowa City, died Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at the Iowa City Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Renee Lunemann officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until services at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to Iowa City Hospice.

Helen Elaine Wonick was born March 20, 1923, in Iowa City. Following graduation from Iowa City City High School, she married Elzar “Al” Wonick on December 13, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri. For over twenty-five years, she worked in the Dietetics Department of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City. During her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering many hours at the senior center in Iowa City. Helen enjoyed her family, going to the State Fair, stock car races at West Liberty, camping, playing cards, watching reruns of her favorite television shows, going out to eat, and Christmas time.

Her family includes a son and his wife, Jim and Joan Wonick of Iowa City; daughter and her husband, Joyce and Allen Eakes of West Branch; six grandchildren, Debra Kober, Lisa Zingula, Kerry Koenighain, Jim Eakes, Kate Shahan, and James “Bryan” Wonick; nine great-grandchildren, Tara Kober, Brooke Bowie, Jeffrey Bowie, Zach Zingula, Karissa Zingula, Jake Koenighain, Jordan Koenighain, Emma Eakes, and Allen Shahan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Al; and grandson, Jeffrey Lane Kober.
