Jan Louise Hieber (Berry), 71, of rural Iowa City, died Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at the Solon Care Center.

Jan was born September 15, 1941, in Burlington, Iowa; daughter of Charles (Herbert) and Margaret (McNeeley) Berry. Jan lived in southeast Iowa most of her life. Her mother, Margaret, passed away during Jan’s early childhood and her father remarried in 1958, moving the family to Springfield, Illinois. Jan and her sister Judy spent their last year of high school at Springfield High School, graduating in 1959.

On July 21, 1961, Jan married Karl Hieber in New London, Iowa. To this union were born five children. Jan accomplished many things as an RN at the VA and in numerous nursing homes in eastern Iowa. Her greatest accomplishment, however, was raising her teenage children and getting them all through college.

She was a member of Eastern Star and White Shrine of Jerusalem, and previously belonged to Nathaniel Fellows Daughters of the American Revolution, the Iowa City Genealogical Society, the Social Order of the Bosiants, and Ladies of the Nile.

Jan is survived by her husband Karl of rural Iowa City; and five children Rita Hieber of Provo, UT; Lynne (Mike) Mwangi-Kiguta of Sun Prairie, WI; Charles (Lisa) Hieber of Cedar Rapids; Shauna (Troy) Hughes of Lawrence, KS; and Deirdra Weeten of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Luke and Grace Mwangi-Kiguta of Sun Prairie, WI; and three sisters, Janet May (Calvin) Burnes of Dubuque; Judy Hurlbut (Bob) of Dickeyville, WI; and Sharon Patterson of Springfield, IL.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, stepmother, and brother-in-law, Doug Patterson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 19, 2012, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 570 Dublin Drive, Iowa City, IA (west of West High School). Visitation will be held one hour prior to service, and burial and grave dedication will follow these services at Oakland Cemetery in Solon.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Solon Care Center, Iowa City Hospice, or the Solon Fire Fighters (First Responders). Online condolences can be sent to her family through the web @www.gayandciha.com.

Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Jan’s family and her services.
