J. Wittmer dies at 57

John J. Wittmer, 57, of Iowa City, former Fairfield resident, died Monday evening at University Hospitals in Iowa City after a long illness.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City with the Rev. Roy C. Nilsen officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Friends may call at Beckman-Callahan Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Wednesday, all day Thursday and after noon Friday at the church. Memorials to UI Cancer Research and Zion Lutheran Church have been established.

Wittmer was born March 18, 1924 in Germanville, the son of Oswald H. and Jennie Lynn Wittmer. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1941 and remained in Fairfield, where he worked at the dairy until moving to Iowa city in 1954. He married Viola Musser Feb. 10, 1962. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lena, at home; a brother, Walter of N. Liberty, and an aunt, Elsie Stortz of Fairfield. He was preceded in death by his parents.
