David was born on October 17, 1950, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Evelyn Musser Metz. He married Rose Gilroy on April 21, 1972, at St. Thomas More Church in Iowa City. David was raised in Ainsworth and moved to Iowa City in 1971. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War for two years and was a member of the Naval Reserve.

David was employed by Proctor and Gamble for 28 years, retiring in 1997. He especially enjoyed teaching the skills of the electrical trade to many new employees. He was a gifted woodworker who enjoyed helping friends and neighbors with their home projects. His grandchildren, Tyler and Kylie, called him “Gramps.” Tyler was Gramps’ right hand on home projects, and Kylie was special because she is so much like Amy, David’s daughter. He also volunteered his time for nonprofit organizations. His passions included building furniture, studying Civil War history, listening to music, traveling and mushroom hunting.

David is survived by his wife, Rose, of Iowa City; his daughter, Amy Greazel, and her husband, David, of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Tyler and Kylie; his father, Elmer Metz, of Lone Tree, Iowa. He also is survived by four sisters, Linda Johnson and her husband, Bill, of Iowa City; Barb Oldfield and her husband, Duane, of Iowa City; Pat Weimer and her husband, Al, of Waynesville, Ohio; and Becky Grantier and her husband, Dave, of Winnett, Montana. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, who inspired his love for woodworking.
