Harold E Rouner age 85 of Iowa City died Saturday, December 6, 2003 at the Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Iowa City following an extended illness. Funeral services to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with Reverend Harlan Gillespie officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Iowa City with Military Rites by the Coralville American Legion with assistance from other local organizations. A reception for family and friends will follow at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home in Iowa City. Online condolences may be sent to his family at www.gayandciha.com. In lieu of flowers a memorial may be given to the Harold E. Rouner Memorial Fund or to Hospice of Iowa City.

Harold was born August 14, 1918 in Iowa City, the son of Joseph and Tillie (Zingula) Rouner. He lived in Iowa City throughout his entire life, with the exception of the years he served in the United States Navy (1942-45) during World War II. During that time he was stationed in the Pacific Theatre. Harold was a life-long electrician, working in and around the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids areas for many years. In 1963, he began his employment at the University of Iowa Physical Plant in the Electric Shop, where he worked until his retirement in 1980. For twenty-five years he also managed the food services in the press box at Kinnick Stadium and Carver Hawkeye Arena for basketball games and wrestling meets. In addition to his love for the Hawkeye’s he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, fishing and listening and dancing to music. Harold was a member of the Iowa City Moose Lodge, the Roy L. Chopek American Legion Post 17 in Iowa City, the Morse Community Club, IBEW, Hills Friends Club, US Bank MESA Club and St. Mark’s Methodist Church of Iowa City.

His family includes his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Rouner, and his four children: Alayne Overly and husband Jerry of Hiawatha, Iowa; Jane Ledman and husband Dick of Manassas, Virginia; Donna Rouner and husband Phil Waggoner of Fort Collins, Colorado; Steve Rouner and wife April of Iowa City, ten grandchildren, one step grandson, nine great grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, one sister, Betty O’Brien, one niece and one nephew all of Iowa City.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Harold’s family and his services.
