Marvin Dwight Hain, 74, of Coralville died peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. Funeral Services will be held at 1pm on Monday, September 24 at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville. Visitation will be Sunday from 4-6pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The American Heart Association.
Marvin was born on November 13, 1937 in Indianola, Iowa on a very cold and snowy day. He was the first of three sons born to Albert L. and Dorothy (Lauck) Hain. The family moved to Winterset, Iowa where Marvin received all of his schooling and graduated from Winterset High School in 1956. During high school, Marvin worked part-time for three grocery stores in Winterset: Thriftway, United Foods and The Biz Mart Super Valu. In the fall of 1956, Marvin attended The University of Iowa and studied Liberal Arts while working part-time at the Hy-Vee store on Kirkwood Avenue and later Smitty’s Super Valu in Coralville.
On Decemeber 29, 1957, Marvin married Nadine Dorrell, his high school sweetheart. Marvin was promoted to assistant store manager at Smitty’s (which was bought by Randalls in 1960) and Marvin and Nadine started a family and built a home on 14th Avenue in Coralville in 1961. Later, Marvin was promoted to store manager in 1968 and they built a larger home in Coralville in 1973.
Marvin and Nadine enjoyed the yearly trips to different parts of the world while employed by Randalls. He retired from the store in 1981 and entered the real estate business with Jerry Eyman and soon they were partners with two Century 21 franchises in Iowa City and Coralville. In 1985, Marvin sold his half of the business to his partner and went back to work for Randall’s as the store manager of the Iowa City store for 5 years.
Having had some health problems, Marvin took a year off and just golfed and relaxed, then returned to real estate as a broker associate with Re/Max in Coralville until his retirement at the end of 2000.
Marvin was very proud of his family and also of the hundreds of people who worked for him during his 29 years with Randall Foods. He was a great Hawkeye fan and he and Nadine had football and basketball season tickets for many years. He enjoyed his retirement with his family and on the golf course and always appreciated having been able to work and raise his family in Coralville.
Survivors include his two children: son Marvin Jr. of Coralville, and daughter Margo Shannon (Rick Noel) of North Liberty; two grandchildren: Jenika Shannon of North Liberty and Mikel Shannon of University Heights; two brothers: Larry (Jo) Hain of Omaha, NE and Keith Hain of Blair, NE; and a former son-in-law David Shannon. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife and his parents and an infant daughter.
