Andrew Larson, 23, a graduate student at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, died unexpectedly Aug. 23, 2012. The family will hold a private memorial service Saturday in Iowa City.
He had graduated in May 2011 from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of science degree, having majored in integrative physiology. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society and was on the University of Iowa President’s List all four years for a GPA of 4.0 or higher.
During the summer of 2010, he volunteered at the Right to Care's HIV/AIDS clinic at Helen Joseph Memorial Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. He had also volunteered at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and had earned his Level 1 emergency medical technician license.
Andrew was a 2007 honors graduate of Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania. He had attended Arthur Elementary School and Franklin Middle School in Cedar Rapids and Webster Middle School in Cedarburg, WI.
An avid soccer player, he had been a member of the Pennsbury varsity squad, as well as club teams FC Philadelphia, Elm Grove (WI) Soccer Association (Premier), and the state champion CRSA Black (Premier).
Andrew is survived by his parents, Dale and Kristine Larson of North Liberty; his brother, Aaron Larson, and Jill Janeck of Chicago; his sisters Krista Larson of Dakar, Senegal, and Kimberly Burrier of Leawood, KS, brother-in-law Garrett Burrier and nieces Sydney and Saydie Burrier. He is also survived by grandparents Kenneth and Lorraine Garmager of Waterloo, and his uncles and aunts; Steve and Marcia Larson of Seattle, WA, Scott and Jackie Garmager of Cedar Falls, IA and Dr. Kirk and Ann Garmager of Coralville, IA.
Andrew will be dearly missed by his family and friends, who treasured his kindness and wit. In lieu of flowers, the family plans to establish a memorial fund to honor his memory. Donations may be sent to Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., PO Box 167, Iowa City, Iowa 52244.
