DEATH TAKES B.F. SHAFFER

Last Civil War Veteran Living in Solon Community

SOLON -- Mr. Benjamin F. Shaffer, 86, passed away at the home of his son, Lanes Shaffer in Eldon, Ia., Friday afternoon, September 4th, at 5:30 o'clock. Mr. Shaffer was the last Civil war veteran in this community.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., September 23, 1844 and came to Iowa when a child. He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Kessler January 31st, 1875.

Surviving are his widow, two sons, Lanes of Eldon and Warren of Aitkins, Minn., and a daughter, Mrs. Ernest Heinsius of Solon. There are also 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two children, Bessie and Paul, died in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's church at Solon Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock, with interment in the church cemetery.
