Edward Jesse Lindebak died on February 3, 2012, at the age of 93. Edward was born in LuVerne, Iowa, on July 5, 1918, the son of Jesse A. Lindebak and Laura Sanford Lindebak. Edward graduated from high school in LuVerne and from Waldorf College in Forest City before joining the Army in 1942. He served in Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he returned to Iowa. He married Margaret Egli in 1945. They settled in LuVerne, where Ed worked at his father’s implement dealership and served as postmaster before he took a job in 1953 at the Farmers State Bank in LuVerne. When the bank was acquired by the Security State Bank in Algona, Ed managed the LuVerne branch, and eventually became a Vice President. He also ran an insurance agency and a tax preparation service during his thirty years at the bank. Ed served the LuVerne community as an active member of the American Legion and the Community Club. He was a vital member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed bowling and golfing.

After Ed’s retirement from the bank in 1983, Ed and Margaret moved to Coralville, where they enjoyed being closer to grandchildren and attending Hawkeye athletics. He participated in the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) in Iowa City for several years.

Ed was proud of his success at raising his family, which he felt was the most important goal of his life. Ed was a hands-on father and grandfather. He spent many happy hours playing outdoor and indoor games with his family and taking the kids for drives around town or out into the country. His children especially benefited from the annual two- week car vacations around the United States. Both he and Margaret attended Keota school activities for their granddaughters and later provided a home away from home for them as they attended the U of I. Grandson Aaron remembers trips to the Hoover Library, Hawkeye women’s basketball games and cribbage.

Ed was a tolerant, patient man. His ready smile and quick wit put everyone around him at ease. He was a role model of a gentleman for his family and all who knew him.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Dawn Helscher (Charles) of Keota, Iowa, and son Layne (Christina Wehde) of Des Moines; grandchildren Angela Brainard (Nicholas) of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Leslie (Jacob) Olson, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Aaron Lindebak of Iowa City; and great grandchildren Kayla and Natalie Olson.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret in 2007, by his infant brother Leonard, and sisters Ferne Neal and Dorothy Hanselman.
