Genevieve Tesar Lutgen, 100, formerly of 1624 E. Court Street and the Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center died Friday, September 26th, 2003, at Mercy Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00am Tuesday September 30,2003 at St. Wenceslaus Church, Iowa City, with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7PM Monday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30PM.A luncheon in the church hall will follow the committal service. Memorials may be made to St. Wenceslaus Church or St. Patrick’s Church.

Genevieve was born September 17, 1903 the daughter of Joseph and Josephine Maresh Wonick. She was born in Newport Township,rural Johnson County,Iowa. She was united in marriage to Albert “Tut” Tesar Jr.in 1921. He died in 1943. Genevieve married Nicholas Lutgen on June 10, 1947 in Raymond, Iowa. He died in 1981.

Genevieve graduated in 1942 from the College of Swedish Massage in Chicago. She had been a cook at Sigma Nu Fraternity and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Genevieve was a seamstress and greatly enjoyed giving piano lessons to many young people in the Iowa City area.

She loved children and had contributed much of her time working with handicapped children. She became a foster mother to Jeffrey Towne. Another passion of Genevieve’s was travel. She traveled and made many trips to Colorado to visit her daughter and grandchildren.

She was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters and the Legion of Mary. She and Nick had also attended St. Patrick’s Church.

Genevieve is survived by her daughters, Bernice Kriz, of Iowa City and Lucille Roberts of Clifton, CO; her foster son, Jeffrey Towne of Iowa City; 4 grandchildren; Suzette Overman and her husband William of Austin, CO, Annette Megan and her husband Robert of Clifton, CO, Mark Tesar Roberts of Clifton, CO, and Thomas Tesar Kriz and his wife Laurie of Iowa City; 16 great grandchildren David Kabela, Teresa Kabela, Jonathon Kabela, Christopher Kabela, Ginger Burch, Chad Roberts, Todd Roberts, Gary Erikson, Nikki Beatty, Shawn Roberts and his wife Loriza, all of Colorado, John Erikson of Kentucky, and Nick Kriz, Ben Kriz and his wife Shawna, Zachary Kriz, Tim Kriz and Brett Kriz all of Iowa City; 7 great-great grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her husbands; two brothers, Frank and Elmer Wonick; two sisters, Margaret Miller and Genevieve’s twin sister, Lydia Schreiber; and two grandsons, David Roberts and Steven Kriz.
