Cedar Rapids GazetteMrs. LaVera Marie Smith, 80, of Allen, Texas, formerly of Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Marion, died of an aortic aneurysm April 29, 2003, in North Central Texas Medical Center Emergency Room. A memorial service is planned June 21 in Iowa.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Slightom of San Juan, Texas, and Linda Smith of Allen, Texas. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Christine Worden of Kewanec, Ill., and Dawn Harder of Las Vegas, Nev., a grandson, Craig Worden of San Juan, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Julia, Jonathan and Kayla Harder and Matthew,Worden; her in-laws, Marianne Seibert of Cedar Rapids, Ila Cole of Pittsburgh, Nadine Behne of Waverly, LaVonne Benson of Carthage, Mo. Charles and Marilyn Smith of Van Meter, Dean and Carol Smith of Des Moines and Roger and JaNeal of Rochester, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oren M. Smith; her parents, Martha Gwendolyn Matthews and Carl Seibert; stepfathers, Jake Hess and Mark Matthews; and her brother, Dean Seibert formerly of Cedar Rapids.
Mrs. Smith was born in Williamsburg, Iowa, in 1923. She lived in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Marion and Des Moines until 1979. At that time, she and her husband, Oren, retired to San Juan, Texas. She lived there until her husband's death in 1997.
She was a member of Eastern Star since 1965 and Daughters of the Nile since 1986. She was also very active in Texas charity work.
In poor health for several years, LaVera's strength, courage, spirit and sense of humor inspired her family and friends.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children through the Al Amin Transportation Fund, 2001 Suntide Rd Corpus Christi, Tx 78409.
