Edward J. Ipsen, 92, of Iowa City died Saturday in Statesville, North Carolina following a brief illness.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday 10am, April 1st at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. John Spiegel officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 5 to 8pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a Rosary will be held at 7 pm . In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pathways Adult Day Health Center.
Ed was born June 23, 1918 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Paul and Mary Treye Ipsen. The family moved to Iowa City in 1923 where Ed graduated from St. Patrick’s High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa. Ed served in the US Army during World War II from 1941-1945. On October 2, 1945 he married Doris Driscoll in Lone Tree.
Ed was a US Postal letter carrier for 30 years, following retirement he was a clock assembler with Amana Furniture.
Ed was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Iowa City Moose Lodge and the National Assns. of Letter Carriers and Retired Federal Employees.
The family extends their appreciation to the staff at Legacy Pointe and Pathways for the wonderful care they provided to their father.
Ed is survived by five daughters, Theresa (Joseph) Wirtz of Wake Forest, NC, Bernadine Tompkins of Troutman, NC, Joan Parrish of Aberdeen, MD, Jean Critchlow and Laureen Ipsen, both of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Katherine (Matt) Larson, Tara Critchlow, Sarah Parrish and Edward (Michelle) Parrish; three great grandchildren, Gavin, Wesley and Alaina; numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son Michael, four sisters Eugenia, Mary Ann, Gertrude and LaVerna, three brothers John, Ray and Paul.
