Nadine Kathryn Rudi, 94, died peacefully on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Monday, February 14 at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where visitation will be on Sunday from 4-6 pm.
Nadine was born December 12, 1916 in Jefferson, IA, the daughter of Algy and Goldie (McClurg) Anderson, the second of seven children. In August of 1939, Nadine was stricken with tuberculosis and admitted to the Oakdale sanitarium in North Liberty. This was a defining event in her life and much of who she was can be traced to Oakdale, as she was there for over two years. During that time, she met Edgar M. Rudi.
Following the war, she found herself back at Oakdale working as a nurse’s aide and discovered through mutual friends that Edgar was attending the university in Iowa City. They were married June 4, 1947 by Edgar’s father in Glidden, IA. She described Edgar as the love of her life.
Nadine was a founding member of the Iowa City Community Theatre. Her many years of active participation, including the office of president, led to her receiving a lifetime membership. This group gave Nadine tremendous joy and the award meant a great deal to her.
Another passion was sewing, especially alterations, as she was well known in Iowa City for her sewing skills. She worked at The Stable, a women’s clothing store, for many years and in addition to being a salesperson, was their “seamstress of record”.
Light-hearted and social, Nadine was well regarded by family and friends. Her optimistic nature made her a pleasure to be around. In her decade of residence in Scottsdale, AZ in her later years, she was well known for her ballroom dancing excellence and bright personality.
Survivors include her three children: daughters Terri Boekhoff of San Francisco, CA and Dianne (David) Lacina of Tiffin, IA, and son Martin (Lisa) Rudi of Westwood, MA; a brother Royal Anderson of Jefferson, IA, six grandchildren: Micah, Kristin, Heather, Shaina, Alex and Francesca; and three step-grandchildren: John, Tracy and Lane, 6 step great-grandchildren and one step great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edgar in 1986 and five siblings.
Nadine will truly be missed by all of those who loved her and cared for her.
Memorials may be directed to The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
