James Covey Ping, Sr., 88 of Coralville and formerly of Memphis, Tennessee died Friday, May 30, 2003 at Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 am Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the home of Charles Ping 110 Sagert Dr. West Branch, Iowa where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Joseph Indian School in South Dakota or St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, is handling the arrangements

James was born December 13, 1914, in Mt. Erie, Illinois the son of Charles William and Jennie Tabitha (Shelton) Ping. On May 15, 1937, he was united in marriage to Mary Molder. They were married at St. Mary’s Church in Memphis.
James worked in the farm equipment industry for 38 years principally for Minneapolis Moline Farm Equipment and later for White Farm Equipment in Memphis, Tennessee, as a credit manager and troubleshooter.

He is survived by his wife Mary M. Ping of Coralville, Iowa; his children, James C. Ping, Jr. and his wife Katherine of Bryan, Ohio, Marianne Paffle and her husband Joe of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Jane E. Harris of Lakewood, Ohio, Charles D. Ping and his wife Margaret of West Branch, Iowa and Patricia R. Shevenell and her husband John of Langly, Washington. 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren also survive him.

His parents precede him in death.
