Myrna Karsten, 67, of Iowa City died in her home surrounded by her family Wednesday, December 29, 2010 following a brief illness with cancer.
Myrna was born October 12, 1943 in Britt, Iowa, the daughter of Erwin and Florence Thompson Burgardt. She was a graduate of Havelock-Plover High School, the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City and the University of Iowa. On June 18, 1966 Myrna married Richard Karsten in Iowa City.
Myrna spent the last 25 years of her career employed as a nurse manager at UIHC. She had a passion for areas of specialty in bariatrics and vascular surgery, and enjoyed sharing her expertise with others.
Upon her retirement, Myrna became active in volunteerism. She volunteered at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and assisted sight impaired veterans in the annual golf outing. Mryna also volunteered with the Robert Lucas Elementary literacy program for children.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the National Bariatric Society and the Society for Vascular Nursing. Myrna loved was an avid golfer, participating in the Monday Night Ladies League at High Point for many years.
Myrna is survived by two children, Karl Karsten of Solon and Gretchen (Martin) Happ of Iowa City; five grandchildren; Kelsey, Kayla, Erich, Evan and Colin; two sisters Muriel (James)Hinrichs of Rochester, MN and Janice Eppelsheimer of Littleton, CO. She was preceded in death by her father and her husband in 1998.
Her mother died December 30th, 2010.
