Gladys R. Rios, 56, of 1600 Westview Drive, Coralville, died Saturday evening, May 24, 2003 at her home in Coralville following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 228 E. Court Street, Iowa City, with the Reverend James Vrba, officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sunny Ridge Cemetery, east of Sigourney, Iowa. Friends may call at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, where there will be a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. and a rosary recited at 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Gladys R. Rios was born June 5, 1946 in Sigourney, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Evelyn (Conklin) Schwenke. She was raised and educated in the Sigourney area until moving to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa. She was united in marriage to John Rios on September 17, 1966 in Iowa City. The couple renewed their vows at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on May 2, 1980. Gladys was currently employed as a research assistant at the University of Iowa in pharmacology, internal medicine and neonatal care. Gladys was extremely active at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She was involved in the RCIA program, God’s Helping Hands and served on the parish council. She also served as Vice President for JR Painting and Decorating Inc. She especially enjoyed antiques, shopping, traveling and spending time with her family.

Gladys is survived by her husband, John of Coralville, three daughters; Kimberly Rios-Kelley of Wellman, Mischelle Rios and Julia Rios both of Coralville, her step-daughter, Jody Phillips and step-son, John McKillip both of Iowa City, ten grandchildren; Jeana, Levi, Bronson, Marshall, Jade, Logan, Lily, Binnie, Sidnie and Amelia, one great granddaughter, Brycelon, three brothers; Ray Schwenke and his wife, Kay of Sigourney, Charles Schwenke and his wife, Jackie of LeClaire, Iowa, Tom Schwenke of Golden, Colorado, three sisters; Geraldine Greiner of Keota, Gloria Millikin and her husband, Gary of Oskaloosa, Gayle Nassar of Cairo, Egypt.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herman.
