Shirley G. Binney, 83, of 701 Oaknoll Drive, Iowa City, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon, May 22, 2003, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence following a lengthy illness.

Memorial Service will be Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 2:30PM at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City, with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. A reception at the funeral home will follow the service. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice.

Shirley was born October 29, 1919, in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of Professor Oscar and Emily Gustafson Nordstrom. She received her BNS degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and her RN degree from Moline Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing.

She served in World War II as a lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. On November 11, 1943 she was united in marriage to William Binney in Gulfport, Mississippi. Subsequent to her service in the military, she became a homemaker and military wife.

Bill and Shirley have made their home in Iowa City since 1964, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and church circles. Shirley was active with PEO Chapter K.C., NN Book Club, University Club and the Questers. She was a member of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and had volunteered at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop.

She especially enjoyed reading a good mystery, sewing, embroidery, playing games, traveling and playing bridge. Shirley enjoyed collecting antique nut dishes.

She is survived by her husband, William of Iowa City; two daughters, Barbara Logan of Arlington, Virginia, Susan Maynard and her husband, Terrill of Reston, Virginia; her son, William Binney Jr., and his wife, Barbara of Annandale, Virginia; two grandsons, John and Matthew Maynard.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Marilynn Larson, and her son-in-law, Richard Logan.
