James A. McAndrews, 84 of Greenwood Manor died Thursday, May 15, 2003 after a lengthy illness.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am Wednesday at St. Wenseslaus Catholic Church. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service 605 Kirkwood Ave. where at Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be at St. James Cemetery, Toronto, Iowa. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Iowa City Senior Center 28 S. Linn Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.

James Anthony McAndrews was born December 31, 1917 in Sharon Township, Iowa. After his father died Jim assumed responsibility for the family farm at the age of 12. He attended Iowa State University and homesteaded in North Dakota. He married Mary Eileen Sheehan in 1947 and raised six children. In 1953 he was awarded the Iowa Farmer of the Year Award for the highest corn yield. In 1957 Jim moved his family to Hereford, Texas where he began his seminal feedlot in the Deaf Smith County.. He became known as a pioneer in the West Texas beef industry. He was the first American to import Salear Cattle to the U.S. from Australia. He ran cattle in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Missouri. In 1973 Jim retired to Iowa City but continued to farm in Clinton and Cedar Counties.

He is survived by Maura, Kevin, Teresa, Neil and Jamie McAndrews. Grandchildren are Carey, Kristine McAndrews, Genevieve and Margarete Walden, Stephen and Katie McAndrews and Cullen and Ella McAndrews. He is also survived by one brother, Philip McAndrews.

His wife, Mary Eileen, one son, Steven and one grandson, John Walden, all preceded him in death.
