Leonard J. “Squirrel” Rummelhart, 89, of 117 3rd Street, Hills, died Thursday, May 8, 2003 at the Atrium Village in Hills following a short illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills, with the Reverend Ed Fitzpatrick, officiating. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Hills. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, where there will be a 5:30 p.m. parish rosary. Friends may meet after 9:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Hills Fire & First Responders, St. Stanislaus Cemetery Fund or Atrium Village.

Leonard Rummelhart was born June 12, 1913, in Liberty Township in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Irene (Wombacher) Rummelhart. He was raised and educated in the Hills area and was then active in the Iowa Civilian Conservation Corps. He was united in marriage to Mary Evelyn Murray on June 14, 1934 in Davenport, Iowa. Squirrel worked for Ivan Rummelhart and Hills Grain for twenty-eight years before working at the University of Iowa where he worked as a custodian at the Field House and Physical Plant for seventeen years retiring in 1979.

He had been a member of the Hills Fire department, Hills Town Council, St. Joseph’s Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, Hills Town & Country Club, Hills Bank Friends Club and had participated in the Hills Congregate Meals Program. He was an avid hunter, loved to fish and also play cards.

Leonard is survived by his son, Robert Rummelhart and his wife, Renita of Hills, two daughters; Ruth Lathrop of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, Barbara Mahanna and her husband, Don of Hills, twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren, also many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, three brothers; Roy, Clair and Ivan, four sisters; Agnes, Lavilla, Rita and Gladys, also his son-in-law, Kenneth Lathrop.
