Dolores Lawton, daughter of the late Dr. R.L.Lawton and Dolores E. Lawton,
died April 29, 2003 at the age of 51. Dolores was a life-long resident
of Iowa City who befriended everyone who had the good fortune to cross her
path. She was kind, inquisitive and a great conversationalist. The family would like thank
everyone who showed her kindness in return. We especially would like to
thank the Iowa City Transit System, its drivers, and many of Dolores's
caring friends who enabled her to live independently for most of her life.
Dolores loved life and bravely faced all challenges.
Dolores worked at Goodwill Industries for 20 years, then decided, in her
words, "to retire early." She then volunteered at the Senior Center for
several years until her diabetes began to restrict her activities. For the
last nine months she was a resident of Greenwood Manor in Iowa City.
While living at Greenwood Manor, she especially enjoyed
winning at blackjack, the resident cats, and making new acquaintances.
We would like to thank the employees for all the care they provided.
We have many fond memories of Big D, as we affectionately called her,
and the family will miss her dearly.
Dolores, like her father, deeded her body to the medical school for research.
Her surviving relatives include her mother Dolores Lawton, brothers
Rick, Joe, Dave, and Damian, sisters Sioux and Khristen, nephews Kyp Oxley, John,
Jesse, and Gabe Lawton, and niece Hannah Duncan. The family intends to
have a gathering in her memory some time this summer and would
kindly request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the
Iowa City Crisis Center, 1121 Gilbert Ct., Iowa City
