Margaret Henning Maher, 94, of Iowa City, died peacefully Monday, July 26 at Mercy Hospice surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be at 10 am Monday, August 2 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City , with Rev. Mark Martin officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice.
Margaret was born July 26, 1916 in Sac City, Iowa, the daughter of William and Agnes Bock Henning. She married Joseph A. Maher on January 30, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan.
Margaret graduated from Sac City High School, attended the Iowa State Teachers College and taught in the rural schools of Sac County for seven years. She graduated from the University of Iowa Nursing program in 1944 then worked at Receiving Hospital in Detroit, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City in the X-ray department and later in the Allergy Department and did several years of work as a private duty nurse. Margaret went on to work for 21 years at the University of Iowa Student Health Infirmary and Clinic, retiring in 1984.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Nathaniel Fellows DAR, Iowa City Women’s Club, Plum Grove Questers, Iowa City Genealogical Society, Johnson County Historical Society and Kendall County, Illinois Historical Society.
Margaret is survived by three sons: Jerry A. Maher (Jane Stroud)of Ankeny, Iowa and sons Jason and Nathan (Samantha) ; William H.(Debbie) Maher and daughters Mollie (James) Hensley and Katie Maher; and Michael P. (Gail) Maher and sons Matthew, James and David all of Iowa City; and one great grand-daughter Kylie Hensley.
Her husband died in 1976.
