Yueling Li (Lotus), 76, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2010 surrounded by her family. Funeral services, sponsored by Chinese Church, Chinese Community association and Chinese School of Iowa City, will be held at 9am on Friday, July 23, 2010 at Lensing’s Oak Hill , 210 Holiday Rd in Coralville.
Yueling Li was born August 2, 1934 in Tianjin, China. She graduated from Nankai University in 1957. As a professor in Biology science, she worked in the Tianjin Medical University from 1957-1988. In August 1988 she moved to Iowa City, invited by The University of Iowa Department of Biology, as a visiting scholar. The next year, joined by her husband Zongxian Chen (Peter), they started their wonderful American life. They founded the Iowa City Chinese School in 1993. She was baptized in the Chinese church in 1990. Since then, she became a faithful Christian. She also served in the UIHC custodial department for 17 years, retiring in 2007. She was a long time teacher in the Chinese school and taught traditional Chinese medicine. One of her students Linda Mulholland said: “I love my Chinese teacher Lotus Li. It is difficult to put into words how she has touched my life. It would be wonderful if all teachers had the integrity that Lotus did. I have learned so much about Chinese medicine. Look at life differently because what I have learned. She has helped me to help others. I will continue to do so. Chinese medicine saved my life and Lotus played a very big role in my recovery”. Yueling Li was a teacher all her life both in China and in the USA. All her students loved her, and respected her.
She survived so many calamities in her early life in China, finally settling down in USA. She enjoyed her 22 years of living in Iowa City. She loved the beautiful, nice small town. She has achieved her American dream. She would express: “Thank God, Thank America”.
Yueling Li was survived by her husband Zongxian Chen (Peter), and four daughters: Xiao Fang Chen, Wei Bian, Xiao Hong Chen, and Xiao He Chen, Son-in-laws: Sheng Tao, Li Wu Cei, Jing Shu, and Zhong Cao, Grand children: Jin Zhao Sheng, Liang Cui, and Jiu Zhou Cao.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses of UIHC and Iowa City Hospice for their kindness and concern.
