Robert E. “ Bud” Halvorsen, 85, lifelong Coralville resident and businessman passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 15, 2010 surrounded by his family at Lantern Park Care Center.

Robert E. Halvorsen was born November 30, 1924 in Coralville, the son of John Hans and Maude Allmand Halvorsen. Bud was born at home and he believed that he was one of the oldest “Coralville born” residents. He was a 1943 graduate of University High School, and then enlisted in the US Marine Corps. In the Marines Bud ran cable lines to US troops. He was serving on Iwo Jima when the US flag was raised. On August 8, 1948 he married Jean Ann Abshire.
For several years Bud worked for Dean Jones at a gas station in Iowa City and delivered heating oil to homes. He later owned Bud’s Dodge Street DX in Iowa City. Bud and business partner, Leo Beuter opened “RV Clinic” in Coralville, where they repaired RV’s and sold camping gear. Following his retirement from RV Clinic Bud kept busy helping his sons in their construction and customized embroidery businesses.
Bud and his wife liked to camp and fish with the motor home for many years. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved all sports; especially when his children, grandchildren or great grandchildren were participants. He was a member of The River Community Church. Bud loved his family deeply and believed strongly in the strength of family and faith. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his two sons, James Halvorsen (Donna Zimmerman) of Coralville and Jerry (Clarine) Halvorsen of Iowa City; six grandchildren, Sheila (Kevin) Grimm of Iowa City,Jason (Jade) Halvorsen pf Prairie du Chien, WI, Calvin Halvorsen of Washington, DC, Ariel Halvorsen, Sydney Halvorsen and Jake Halvorsen, all of Iowa City; four great grandchildren, Keeley Grimm, Berkley Grimm and Lainey Grimm, all of Iowa City and Summit Halvorsen of Prairie du Chien, WI; his brother, William Halvorsen of Coralville and his sister, Alta (Dale) Deevers of Orlando, FL.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jean and a granddaughter, Jennifer Halvorsen.
