Madaline L. Gilliam, 96, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon, IA. A Memorial Service celebrating Madaline’s life is on Friday, June 18 at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road in Coralville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Blue Eye United Methodist Church in Blue Eye, MO or to New Horizons United Methodist Church in Coralville.
Madaline was born in Fairfax, MO on April 15, 1914, the daughter of James and Maud (Fellows) Cook. She grew up in Atchison County, MO and graduated from Tarkio High School in Tarkio, MO. She later went on to earn her BA from Tarkio College and her MA from Northwest Missouri State University. For over 33 years, Madaline was a teacher in the Tarkio area. On October 2, 1936, Madaline was united in marriage to Richard Gilliam in St. Joseph, MO. They raised two sons, David and Bill. Richard passed away on December 19, 1993.
Madaline was a wonderful lady who truly cherished her family. She was passionate about teaching and valued each and every one of her students. In her free time, Madaline enjoyed gardening, painting, quilting and knitting.
Dick and Madaline lived in the Table Rock Lake area near Branson for 25 years after they retired. They spent many winters in Texas. They had enjoyed their travels throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In 2002 Madaline moved to Windmill Pointe in Coralville where she lived independently until a fall in August, 2009. Since then, her life was made more comfortable with excellent care by the staffs of Solon Nursing Care Center and Iowa City Hospice.
Survivors include her two sons: David (Sharon ) Gilliam of Blue Eye, MO and their children; Kristen (Dave) Dinsmore of Manhattan, KS and Sean (Jill) Gilliam of Blue Eye, MO, and son Bill (Judy) Gilliam of Iowa City, IA and their children; Mark (Kathy) Gilliam of Thousand Oaks, CA, Andrew (Kasey) Gilliam of Roselle, IL and Sara (Chris) Krajacic of Denver, CO. Survivors also include Madaline’s great-grandchildren, Jack, Megan, Clara, Maggie, Joe, Ella, Charlie, and one arriving in August.
Madaline was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
