Robert H. “Bob” White, age 81 of 114 Montrose Avenue, Iowa City died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness.

A service of Celebration will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. Family comitial services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 2 to 5pm Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Bob’s memory to the Athletic Departments of City High School & West High School in Iowa City or the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. The Sunday Parking Ordinance will be in effect for both Sunday and Monday for parking around the church. Online condolences may be sent for Bob’s family through our website @www.gayandciha.com.

Robert Harold White was born December 7, 1921, near North Liberty, Iowa the son of Aubrey and Cleora (Chamberlain) White. He graduated from City High School in 1940 and went on to receive both his BA and Masters Degree from the University of Iowa. During World War II, he served as a navy pilot in the Navy Air Corps. During this time, he also trained many Navy pilots. On March 1, 1944, he married June Williams in Corpus Christie, TX. Bob has been in the capacity of teacher, coach and athletic director for many years in the Iowa City Community School District.

He was member of the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Athletic Directors Association, which he founded and served two years as its president, a member of the Quarterback Club, Military Affairs, and a member of the Johnson County Retired Teachers Association. Bob was recognized as the Athletic Director of the Year for both the State of Iowa and for the entire United States.

His family includes his wife, June; three sons, Terry and his wife, Jody White of Plano, TX, Tom White of Denver, CO, and Timothy Robert and Joan White of Denver, CO; four grandchildren, Chase, Riley, Halie, and Robert White; two sisters, Ruth White of Iowa City, and Carolyn Westfall of Urbana, IL.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Don and Jerry White; and sisters, Helen Hirt and Jeanne Hoppe.
