Melvin Kessler, 74

Melvin J. Kessler, 74, of Solon died Wednesday morning, May 12, 2004, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a sudden illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Solon, with the Rev. David Wilkening, officiating. Burial with military rites will be at St. Bridget's Cemetery, Nolan Settlement.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Friday at Brosh Chapel, Solon with a vigil service beginning at 7 pm. Melvin is survived by his wife, Doris Kessler of Solon; daughters, Sandra Marie Kessler of Solon, Cynthia Ann Wille (Randy) of North Henderson, Illinois, and Linda Jo Lunsford (Steve) of Harlingen, Texas; son, Randall John Kessler (Cynde) of Solon, 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, sisters Dorothy Linnell of Solon, and Darlene Klouda of Solon; brothers, Clarence Kessler of Cedar Rapids and Eugene Kessler of Cedar Rapids.

Melvin J. Kessler was born on September 7, 1929, near Cedar Bluff the son of John and Celia (Moravek) Kessler. He graduated from Tipton High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 16, 1952, he married Doris Jean Wordsworth at St. Bridget's Church. He was a life-long farmer. Melvin was a dedicated member of Solon American Legion Stinocher Post #460 where he served as Chaplain for 22 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
