William A. “Bill” Hoffey, 92, of 811 E. Church Street in Iowa City, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following complications of renal failure.

A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held Thursday, March 20th, at 11:00 AM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City with Reverend Paul Akin officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa City Senior Center.

Bill was born February 15, 1911, in Windham, Iowa, the son of Perry & Edna Chandler Hoffey. Moving into Iowa City in 1922, he graduated from Iowa City High School. He married Evelyn Mingo on March 19, 1932, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The couple would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on Wednesday.

Bill operated Hoffey’s Barber Shop on East College Street in Iowa City for many years and later worked as a barber at University of Iowa Hospitals, retiring in 1976. Bill enjoyed fishing, traveling and Iowa wrestling but above all, was passionate in playing pool and playing in tournaments at the Senior Center.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Iowa City, two sons, Paul Hoffey & his wife Delsie of Iowa City and Dr. Donald Hoffey & his wife Sally of Sedona, Arizona; three daughters in law, Barbara Helmer of Springdale, Iowa, Janet Hoffey of Iowa City and Nadine Hoffey of Cedar Rapids; a half sister, Madonna Harms of Rolfe, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, five step grandchildren, two step great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Sylvester, and two sons, Richard & Jerry.
