Gary Ullrich, 62, of 1814 Hollywood Blvd. in Iowa City, died unexpectedly Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born April 17, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of George and Gloria (Scartozzi) Ullrich. Gary graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines in 1965. He married Inga R. Wallize May 21, 1983 in Ames, Iowa. Gary worked at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in the Dialysis Unit for many years – retiring in 2007.

Gary was a member of the Iowa City VFW and the NRA. He served in the United States Marines Corps during the Vietnam War as a field medic.

Survivors include his daughter Susan Ullrich and son Jeffrey Ullrich, both of Iowa City; sister, Vickie (Michael) Ballard of Altoona and a brother Henry “Hank” of Des Moines; his father in law, John Wallize of Waxahachie, Texas; brothers and sisters in law, Pamela Wallize of Minneapolis and LeeAnn (Jude) Smith of Red Oak, Texas.

Gary was preceded in death by his wife Inga in 2006, his parents and his step-father Bill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
