John E. Einspahr, 89, of Iowa City passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 8, 2010 after a period of declining health. Visitation will be from 4 - 5:30 pm on Sunday, January 10 at Lensing Funeral Home , 605 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm on Monday, January 11 at The First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, IA. Burial with military honors will follow at the Odebolt Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or The Johnson County Humane Society.
John was born December 17, 1920 in Battle Creek, IA, the son of Fred E. and Margaret (Leuz) Einspahr (UI –’12). He was a 1938 graduate of Odebolt High School and a 1942 graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota . Later that year, John joined the United States Army and remained in the service until being honorably discharged in 1945. John was united in marriage to Irene Williams in Ft. Lewis, WA on September 6, 1945. John and Irene resided in Deephaven, MN from 1945 – 2003 and raised three children during that time. In 2003, John and Irene moved to Iowa City.
John was a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan who, along with Darrell Wyrick, hosted and organized the Iowa Party in Minneapolis every other year for the Hawkeye/Gopher football games. John also was passionate about music and cared deeply about animals.
John is survived by his wife, Irene, of Iowa City, son ,Fred (Susan), of Kalamazoo, MI, daughters, Mary Einspahr Waters of West Branch, IA and Ann Parent (Rick) of Warren, ME, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Margaret Ann Gilbert .
