Kay Deegan Mescher (71) of Iowa City, IA died peacefully on the morning of January 8, 2010 after a valiant battle with cancer. A celebration of life service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, January 16 at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. A gathering for family and friends will be held from 4-7 pm on Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to: Iowa City Learning Foundation, Iowa City Hospice, The American Cancer Society, UI College of Dentistry, or UI College of Engineering Basil Deegan Scholarship in care of the U of I Foundation.
Kay loved life and lived it to the fullest, giving herself fully to others, teaching from life experiences, and caring for others in her unique way. She nurtured close friendships as well as loving relationships with her family. She dearly loved and deeply respected her long time partner and husband Dave, enjoyed close relationships with her siblings and parents, and delighted in her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Kay is survived by her mother Mildred Deegan, husband Dave Tolliver, sister Karen “Dee” Vanderhoef (Peter), brother William Deegan (Lek), children Paul Mescher (Amy), Heidi Kovie (Paul), stepson Timothy Tolliver (Jessica), and grandchildren Ashley Mescher, Ryan Mescher, Stephen Kovie, Timothy Kovie, and Jessica Kovie. Her father, Basil Deegan passed away in December of 2000.
