Richard T. Tobias, 73 of Iowa City, died Sunday, November 22, 2009, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, November 28, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, November 27, from 6-8 pm at the funeral home and from noon until service time on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) or the Iowa City Animal Shelter.
Richard was born on April 13, 1936, in Reading, PA, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Shimkanon) Tobias. He attended Sacred Heart Preparatory School in Batavia, IL and later went on to graduate from Sacred Heart Seminary in Shelby, OH. After graduation, Richard taught junior high at Holy Cross School in Batavia, then served as the Business Manager for the Seminary through 1965. On July 18, 1970, Richard married Carol Schellenberg in Joliet, IL. Richard worked for Associates Financial Services from 1966-1981 and for Hawkeye Food Systems from 1981 until his retirement in 2000. After retiring, he continued to work part-time for Hargrave Mc Eleney from 2000-2001, Universal Cooperative from 2001-2002, and for ACT from 2002 to present.
Richard was a caring man with a wonderful sense of humor. He treasured his family and the time he was able to spend with his dog Sandy. He enjoyed working part-time, volunteering for Big Brothers and Big Sisters and taking his dog to the dog park. He was an enthusiastic Iowa Hawkeye fan, an avid coin collector and a skilled handyman.
Survivors include his wife Carol of Iowa City; six siblings: Dorothy Romani of Bonsall, CA, Father Joseph Tobias, MSC of Nazareth, PA, Betty (Robert) Smith of Wyomissing, PA, Frank (Susan) Tobias of Silverdale, PA, Mary Ann (Paul) Kershner of Williamsburg, VA and Joan (Joseph) Noll of Riverview Park, PA; 11 nieces and nephews and Sandy, Richard’s beloved dog.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents.
