Phyllis J. Spilger, 76, of 1115 Rochester Avenue, Iowa City died Friday, February 28, 2003, at Mercy Iowa City following a lengthy illness.

Memorial Services are planned for May with burial in Oakridge Cemetery, West Liberty, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.

Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.

Phyllis was born March 23, 1926, in Walcott, Iowa, the daughter of Roland and Thelma Arp Rochau. She graduated from Atalissa High School and moved to Iowa City in 1943. Phyllis married Harold Spilger on January 8, 1946, in Atalissa.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school. Phyllis and her husband have been foster parents over the years. She was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed mushroom hunting.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Harold of Iowa City, two sons, Philip Spilger and his wife Linda of Lakewood, Washington, and Stephen Spilger and his wife Mary Ann of Iowa City, one daughter, Rebecca Spilger of Marion, Iowa, two grandchildren, Scott & Amy Spilger of Iowa City, her brother, Donald Rochau of Hanover Park, Illinois, her sisters, Bernice Johnson of Richfield, Utah, Dorothy Spilger and her husband Merlyn, and Arlene Passmore and her husband Donald, both of Atalissa, Iowa, and 20 Nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
