Violet J. Gaffey age 90 of 427 N. Dodge Street, Iowa City died on Saturday, March 1, 2003 following a lingering illness at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic’s in Iowa City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5 to 7 pm at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Iowa City Hospice, First United Methodist Church of Iowa City or the Alzheimer’s Association. Violet Jane Gaffey was born on December 28, 1912 in Jamison, Iowa the daughter of Byrd and Etta Jane Wright Pressly. She graduated from Osceola High School and married Leo Gaffey in February of 1942. She was a mother and wife to her family, raising her children in their younger years. She then worked at S.S. Kresger Five and Dime Store in the Soda Fountain as a waitress. Violet was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Iowa City and the Women’s Circle at the church. She enjoyed her family, reading, plants and sewing, her children will remember her calm and steadfast nature along with her favorite saying “good grief”

Her family includes a daughter Wanda Gaffey of Iowa City, a son Leo W. Gaffey of Lawson, Missouri, two granddaughters Jennifer Steward of Kansas City and Tiffany Phillips of Hermitage, Missouri, one great great-granddaughter Jordan Mackenzie of Hermitage, Missouri, one sister Pearl and husband Cliff Spaulding of Olympia, Washington along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, husband, three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Violets family and her services.
