Helen L. Savage, 73 of Oaknoll Retirement Residence died Thursday, February 20, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be on Monday 10:00am at First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iowa City.

Helen was born August 25, 1929, the daughter of Rufus H. and Edna Kuhn Hoffman in Sigourney, Iowa. On December 23, 1950, she was united in marriage to William R. Savage. The couple was married in Sigourney, Iowa.

Helen graduated from Sigourney High School in 1947. She earned her B.S. degree in home economics from Iowa State University in 1951; she earned a M.S. in home economics in 1968 from the University of Iowa where she earned her Ph.D. in post secondary and continuing education in 1980.

She taught home economics, biology, and freshman English at Roland High School from 1952-1954. From 1968-1987 she taught at the University of Iowa in the Department of Home Economics, since 1981 as assistant professor. Helen also taught International Cooking at Kirkwood Community College. She was a member of Omicron Nu, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Lambda Theta, and Institute of Food Technologists. She was also a member of First Presbyterian Church, University Club, Craft Guild of Iowa City, University of Iowa Retirees Association, and the Midwest Weavers Association. Helen’s interests were weaving, reading, traveling, and gardening.

She is survived by her children, William D. Savage and his wife Susan and their son William Zachery all of Downers Grove, Illinois; Barbara E. Weeg and her husband James of Cedar Falls, Iowa; one brother, Larry R. Hoffman and his wife Margaret of St. Joseph, Illinois.

Her husband and parents both preceded her in death.
