Maynard Eugene Schneider, 80, of Iowa City died of cancer at his home Sunday morning, March 13, 2005.

Mr. Schneider was born in Riverside, Iowa on July 13, 1924, the son of Peter and Agnes Streb Schneider. He served in the Marine Corps, 5th Marine Division, in the South Pacific, Japan and China. He married Mary Agnes Duffey at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree on June 17, 1947.

Maynard farmed in Riverside for five years and coached basketball at St. Mary’s Catholic School. He owned and operated a bowling alley in Rockwell City, Iowa for a number of years. In 1964, he was elected Sheriff of Johnson County and served until 1973. He was a president of the Iowa Sheriffs Association in 1967 and was made a Lifetime Member. He was also active with the National Sheriffs Association and served on a number of its committees. Since 1973 he was a realtor in the Iowa City area associated with Hoffman-Waters Realtors and most recently Dick Davin Real Estate.

Maynard belonged to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Johnson County Farm Bureau, the Johnson County Cattleman’s Association, the Coralville American Legion and the Richmond AMVETS and had served on the Penn Township School Board where he participated in planning and building the township’s first consolidated grade school in North Liberty. He was a former member of the Regina High School Booster Club and had been a 4-H Club Leader. Maynard belonged to several bowling leagues and was an avid fan of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Family wishes to thank the staff at Mercy Hospital and Iowa City Hospice for their kindness and care.

He is survived by his wife, Mary and five children, Jean Masbruch and Paul (Jolyn) Schneider of Iowa City, Mary Pat (Ira) Rosenberg of Burr Ridge, Illinois, Neil (Sue)
Schneider of Brewster, New York, and Craig (Jodi) Schneider of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Ellen (Charles) Alberhasky of Iowa City,
his brothers, Robert (Irene) Schneider of Iowa City, Elmer (Vernita) Schneider of Riverside and Melvin (Loretta) Schneider of Washington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
