Dr. Samir D. Gergis, 71, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Dr. Gergis was born September 24, 1933 in Cairo, Egypt the son of Danial and Hekmat (Assad) Gergis.

Dr. Gergis was a graduate of Cairo University College of Medicine, which he entered at age 14. He completed research fellowships in Stockholm, Sweden and the University of Copenhagen. He received his Ph.D. in 1967.

Dr. Gergis moved to Iowa City in 1968 and joined the faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Iowa. His professional career spanned thirty five years of dedicated service.

Dr. Gergis is survived by his two brothers Salah (Maria Eugenia) Danial of New York, New York and Safwat (Vivian) Gergis of Honolulu, Hawaii; and a niece Christina.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
