David Graydon McQuilkin

David Graydon McQuilkin 85, of Windmill Manor in Coralville, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, August 4, 2005.

David was born June 27, 1920 in rural Benton County, Iowa the son of Greer and Alice (Matson) McQuilkin He married Suzanne Ward on February 1, 1947. She passed away on January 15, 1994.

He attended Central College in Pella from 1937-1938. He then transferred to Iowa State, where he went on to become the ping pong champion.

David served in the United States Army during World War II. Upon returning, he farmed the Century family farm and met Suzanne. Together they raised their four children and bred Belgian draft horses, giving hay and sleigh rides. His favorite love was a Palomino stallion, Goldbrick. David would pass time at Platt’s Nursery and Earl May doing landscaping. He continued farming until his retirement.

David was a member of the Waterloo Elks Club, Optimist Club, Coin Club, and First Presbyterian Church. After moving to Waterloo, his main focus was his garden, flowers, his collection of harness, buckles and snaps, and of course his grandchildren.

David is survived by his four children, Susan Schmidt (David) of Chicago, IL, Melissa Beltz of Coralville, David McQuilkin (Deb) of LaPorte City, and James McQuilkin (Corinne) of Round Lake Beach, IL; his four grandchildren, Alicia McQuilkin, Holly Schmidt, Siobhan McQuilkin and Eddie Barnash; one sister Gretchen McQuown of Red Oak, IA and one brother Kirk McQuilkin (Wanda) of La Porte City.
David was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
